Meditation, A Way of Living
There is a lot of information about the practice of meditation. Meditation is the art of silencing the mind. When the mind is silent, concentration is increased and we experience inner peace in the midst of worldly turmoil. This elusive inner peace is what attracts so many people to meditation and is a quality everyone can benefit from. Meditation is usually done in a quiet place, sitting in a comfortable position, often with a straight back and crossed legs. Then we pay attention to our breathing and relax and allow our mind to be silent.
I learned to meditate in 1972 in a room above the Greyhound bus terminal in downtown Washington D.C. It was summertime and the windows were open, so we heard the bus engines and smelled the diesel exhaust fumes. Our teacher intentionally created this atmosphere so that we could learn that meditation was more than quiet or posture. Meditation is finding the connection within us that is a part of the Oneness. So, it doesn’t matter how we do it. In fact, our lives can be a meditation. When we learn how to focus and become completely present in what we see or do; we are meditating,
I am fortunate to go out in nature and walk frequently. I intentionally do not take a music player with me so I can be in the moment with the sky, the trees and the red rocks. I encourage all of you wonderful beings of light to find your meditation practice, if you are not now doing it. You will become more relaxed. You will find that little things don’t bother you as much. You will become healthier. You will become more productive. And you just might get in touch with your life purpose, if you don’t already know it. Make it a way of living and you will be happy you did. From my relaxed heart to yours, Thomas
