I Remember You

It’s easy to forget what an amazing gift life really is. Our lives are nothing but a cosmic blink. Even our seemingly all-encompassing world is just a tiny blue dot circling an average sized star spiraling around a galaxy of 200-400 billion stars, which itself is just one galaxy among billions more. Yet for one brief moment, we get to experience the wonders of existence, of consciousness.  We get to be human and have memories. like this.

I remember you
You’re the one who made my dreams come true
A few kisses ago

I remember you
You’re the one who said “I love you, too”
Yes, I do, didn’t you know?

I remember, too, a distant bell and stars that fell
Like the rain out of the blue

When my life is through
And the angels ask me to recall
The thrill of them all
Then I shall tell them I remember you.

The lyrics were written by Johnny Mercer who was nominated for eighteen Academy Awards and won four.  Two of those four were Days of Wine and Roses and Moon River.  The song was written in 1941.

The last stanza is my favorite.  I used to sing the song in my room at home along with a recording by Nat King Cole.  As I sang these lines, I could see myself walking through Heaven and meeting some angels.  I would tell them that I remember you.  It is a gorgeous romantic line and I have shared it with Lou Ann who has been the thrill of them all.  Tonight as I look back over my life and remember all the thrills of it; they are my family and friends.  My amazing children, step children, grandchildren, great grandchildren have enriched my life immeasurably.  The friends I have met on the journey were like “stars that fell out of the blue”.  I will always remember you. From my romantic heart to yours, Thomas
