Creating Peace on Earth

I know folks who go into public bathrooms and pick up paper towels and such that others have dropped and dispose of them.  I know a person that when they are driving their car, they constantly think of how they might help others.  They watch and slow down so others can get in or speed up to make a space.  They get into the right lane when their are two lanes merging into one and wait their turn patiently, instead of speeding ahead in the left lane and making others move so they can get in.  I know folks who hold doors for others even when they don’t need to.  I know a person who always says thank you even about the smallest of things.  I know a couple who always ask folks their name and inquire about them and the folks feel special.

Jill and Sy Miller wrote the wonderful song “Let There be Peace on Earth” in 1955.  The opening line goes Let there be peace on Earth and let it begin with me.  I believe this is the way peace will occur, by people who do kind things for others.  Doesn’t it feel good when someone is kind to you or others?  It fills me up and I feel better about myself.  When I feel better about myself, it is hard for me to find fault in others.  In 1982 Anne Herbert wrote “Practice Random Acts of Kindness and Senseless Acts of Beauty on a place mat in Sausalito California.  She wrote the book of the same name in 1993.  This is how we will tip the scales in favor of those who seek and love peace.

You and I don’t need to spend a lot of money.  We don’t need to take extra classes.  We don’t need to form large rallies of concerned folks.  We don’t need to influence politicians. We only need to be kind to each other as often as possible to both family, spouses and strangers. Then there will be peace on Earth, began with WE.  From my peaceful heart to yours, Thomas
